Announcing My New Role As Digital Director of The Society Diaries
Life has a funny way of working itself out. One year ago, I was sitting at my desk in my office job trying to remain positive as I was anxiously working my way through the motions of an 8-5 salaried management position that was not the right fit for me. As the Universe would have it, I was also completely unaware that 10 days later all of it would disappear in one fowl swoop. (You can read all about that here.) The guillotine was about to come down on the comfortable–yet also frustrating and unfulfilling–professional life I had become accustomed to: and wow, am I glad it did.
So here I am today: making an exciting announcement one year later. On September 1st, I stepped into a new role as Digital Director for The Society Diaries magazine. It’s the premiere luxury magazine of Texas, and the publication has been a part of my life for six years now. The Editor-In-Chief Lance Avery Morgan was kind enough to publicly welcome me into the position today with a lovely announcement that you can read here. (Thank you Michael Giordano Photography for the head shot!)
In my role of Digital Director, I will be focused on growing THESOCIETYDIARIES.com and its associated social media platforms by further integrating partnerships with brands and nonprofits. We will be telling even more stories about the people, places and things our readers love, enhancing existing partnerships with our favorite brands, and establishing relationships with new ones. We will, of course, continue curating all of our social channels to keep bringing you the best (and most beautiful) that our great state of Texas has to offer.
The reason I’m announcing this news in the career motivation section of my personal blog platform is because I learned something unexpected, very important and worth sharing in accepting the opportunity to step into this new, exciting, PERFECT FIT FOR ME role: I started writing articles for The Society Diaries in 2011 when I graduated from college. Before I even landed my first FT job. It has been my side hustle for SIX. YEARS. (Aside from my relationship with Dan, and attending the same school growing up from elementary through high school, I’ve never committed to anything else in my life for six years at a time.)
The whole time I was working day jobs and pondering my place on the planet, worrying myself around a hamster wheel about if I was following the right path, I was slowly chipping away at the stage I’d be “walking onto” right now. I just didn’t realize it.
From Writer I became Associate Editor. From Associate Editor I became Contributor. From Contributor I became Co-Creator and Co-Host of The Society Diaries TV. For the past year I have been a Digital Editor, learning the ropes under friends and mentors who were teaching me the tricks of the digital trade. Then finally, a few weeks ago, I experienced another shift in perspective on career, life and the meaning of things…and then I was offered to step into this Digital Director role full time.
The moment I realized I actually knew nothing about how I was headed toward my dream life, but that it was okay and I surrendered to the Universe anyway, I just committed to making myself a little bit better and more useful every single day. That’s when things started to fall into place. The answer is: THERE IS NO ANSWER. Just prepare, prepare, prepare…so that “When opportunity knock(s), you don’t send anyone to get it- answer the door, welcome it, let it in, or regret it.”
Now, after the most difficult and uncertain year of my life, here I am. With a professional identity again, in a position that fits me and my lifestyle and all of my idiosyncrasies better than I could ever have dreamed of. And with a blog that has an audience I get to manage on the side. And with some consulting jobs (I help people build their personal brands and websites under my digital consulting company Leeper Morrison Communications). For the first time ever…I feel complete and I feel 100% like myself.
