Pajama Dressing on the Pier
Location: Santa Monica, California
The second half of our Holiday vacation was spent on the West Coast. We flew cross-country with Pudge in tow to spend the end of December and the first few days of January between Los Angeles, Pasadena and Anaheim for our Rose Parade scouting trip. Dan’s band was selected to march in the Rose Parade next New Year’s day (January 1st, 2018), which you can read all about here. The Tournament of Roses hosted Dan and me, as well as Dan’s two colleagues and their wives. It was quite a special preview of the festivities. While we were there, we had a completely full itinerary booked by our travel consultant. Among the stops on our itinerary were Universal Studios, Disneyland, Hollywood, a New Year’s Eve Pink Martini concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles, and the Santa Monica Pier.
*Just a quick aside: RITA MORENO sang in the New Year’s Eve concert with Pink Martini. I was not expecting that, and as a musical theater girl, watching Rita sing “America” from West Side Story in the flesh (all 85 beautifully aged years of it) quickly became a life highlight.
Needless to say, even though Dan and I have spent a lot of time in Los Angeles visiting his sisters, we had the best time getting the full touristy SoCal weekend. We had plenty of delicious food (if you haven’t been to the restaurant in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, go and order the bone marrow), and we witnessed plenty of Hollywood magic (go to Universal Studios and ride the Studio Tour ride!). Of course, the Rose Parade is a marvel to watch live. My favorite float to see in person was, of course, the pool with the surfing dogs.
One thing I was not expecting on this trip was the chilly cloudy weather. The way the logistics worked out, I left a suitcase behind with the heavy winter wardrobe I used on the East Coast, and took one with lighter clothing to our hotel. Luckily I had at least a couple of things with me that I could layer. This bulky navy sweater from Tobi.com was one of those things. The day we went to the Santa Monica pier was rainy and chilly. I just wanted to be cozy, so I came very close to my version of the Pajama Dressing trend. These Banana Republic pants are super comfortable, so I threw them on with my oversized sweater and my new Steve Madden burgundy mules that were a Christmas gift (I’m obsessed with the color of these, by the way). I wrote about them in an earlier blog post of my favorite mule round-ups (here) and my wonderful mother used it as a guide to find me a pair for underneath the tree 🙂
Despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions, we found a fun place to eat near the end of the pier. We warmed up while looking out at the ocean- who can complain about an ocean view, ever?
