Behind My Look for the San Antonio Fashion Awards
OUR NOMINATION FOR MAGAZINE OF THE YEAR: THE SOCIETY DIARIES
There is a special energy that surrounds the San Antonio Fashion Awards. It’s a night when local fashion enthusiasts and creative entrepreneurs throw caution to the wind to don their most daring statement ensembles and pose proudly on the red carpet, enjoying a beautifully produced awards show under the palm trees at The Tobin Center in support of their peers chasing big dreams. Hosted and produced by Style Lush TV, SAFA’s momentum has continued to snowball with each year in existence. It’s a joy to be a part of, and we were thrilled at The Society Diaries to be nominated for Magazine of the Year for the third consecutive year in a row. The event began with this Nominee Blooper Reel video, which was such a fun way to set the tone for the night. We didn’t win this year, but we are very happy for San Antonio Magazine to have earned the recognition.
EVENT PREP: MAKEUP + HAIR
The theme for the awards show is always “Hollywood Glam” or “Avant Garde”…the attendee gets to choose. It makes for an interesting red carpet arrival hour and it’s a people-watching feast for the eyes. The first year of the awards I leaned towards Hollywood Glam and last year I leaned towards Avant Garde, so this year I was aiming for something in the middle. My inspiration was to feel totally authentic, but with a little bit of drama. I completely changed my look and went with something very different than usual. I figured: if it’s been a year of self-discovery, personal growth, and learning to love the creative artist I am inside, then why not own it – go a little over the top and dare to make a statement? To help me pull off this delicate balance, I worked with my friends Olivia Villa of Liv Beautified for makeup and Lisa Weller of Twirl Salon for hair. These two friends made me feel like an exotic queen and I loved playing the part for the night.
RED CARPET STYLE: SONSUZ + PRESENTING AN AWARD FOR FGI
Because my mom and I work together, we are almost always at events together. For this year’s SAFA event we partnered with our dear friend Angelina Mata of Mata Atelier to be dressed in her new caftan line launching this fall called Sonsuz. I played dress-up with Angelina at the atelier a few days before the event – my look was completely her creation. From alterations to the outfit, to the jewelry, to the clutch I carried. When I tried her caftan + pants suit on, I fell in love with it immediately. The high-waisted pants with the open top made me feel confident, comfortable, and powerfully feminine. There was just something about the look that was different; something that sent a tasteful message of authenticity and nonconformity that I both crave and strive to embody these days.
The final part of the night that made it so special was that I was given the opportunity to present an award on behalf of Fashion Group International of San Antonio, as part of our inaugural partnership with the San Antonio Fashion Awards. FGI gives out Rising Star Awards annually to those worthy of recognition who are already established and up-and-coming in the fashion and beauty industry. On behalf of the Board of FGI San Antonio, I was thrilled to present Jessica Zapatero of Taruca Outdoor with the Entrepreneur Rising Star of the Year award.
After all was said and done, here were my takeaways from SAFA 2017:
- When your intentions are set from a place of love and authenticity, people can feel it, and they will usually respond in a positive way.
- I’m realizing now that standing tall in who you are and loving the person you are becoming / who you’ve always been is the meaning of true beauty.
- The older I get, the more comfortable I become with who I am, and that’s liberating.
- Dare to show the world your inner freak once in a while. I’ve always played things safely, for fear of what others might say.
- Being fearlessly feminine can be achieved through so many different aesthetics and styles. Whatever your aesthetic is, own it and celebrate it.
Thank you to Sonsuz, Twirl Salon and Liv Beautified for collaborating with me on this look. I received traded services in exchange for this partnership, but all opinions are my own.
