A Casual, Carefree Way To Take in Some Classics Under The Texas Stars
Looking for a great date night option this summer? No need to look further than downtown San Antonio and the rooftop of ArtPace for an easy, breezy way to enjoy some live music under the Texas sky and celebrate contemporary art and jazz. ArtPace just kicked off its KRTU Rooftop Jazz Concert Series last weekend with the Rooftop Jazz Season Announcement Party featuring the Doc Watkins Trio. Dan and I went to check it out and we had the best time mingling with fellow music lovers, making new friends, and sipping on local brews.
Doc Watkins is the musician and entrepreneur behind Jazz, TX, so we support him and our friend Brandon Guerra the Jazz, TX resident drummer whenever we can. Also, as a Trinity University alum, I’m a proud listener of KRTU and a major fan of the station and its programming. I didn’t expect to post about our experience on the blog (hence the poor quality iPhone snapshots), but if I find something unique and worth doing in town, I’m always excited to share it.
Each concert in the summer series focuses on a particular jazz theme celebrating historical figures and styles performed by local and regional musicians. A digital projectionist also provides a visual element featuring relevant jazz imagery that really enhances the performance and audience experience.
The series is for members of ArtPace and / or members of KRTU only, but membership to either nonprofit organization is very affordable, and a great way to gain access to annual programming that will most certainly up your cultural game and your appreciation for what San Antonio has to offer. More importantly, the work of both ArtPace and KRTU not only continues to transform our city, but also has reach and recognition all over the world.
