The Class That Will Completely Bounce Away Your Boring Fitness Routine
Growing up, my best friend had a trampoline. She and I would bounce on it for hours- morning, day, night…it didn’t matter. It was where we would get our thrills; it was where we’d collapse from exhaustion and look up at the Texas sky and talk about life (which, at 9, 10, and 11 years old was beautifully simple). If we weren’t focused on reaching new heights with a daring double-bounce, we were focused on popping the other out of their “popcorn kernel” or mastering an airborne somersault. There’s something about the weightlessness you feel on a trampoline that makes you lose track of time…that makes you feel just a little bit more free.
I think part of the reason we work out as adults is to feel that sense of endorphin-induced freedom from the stresses of daily life, if even just for a little bit. Even if we don’t realize that’s what we’re actually needing: a reprieve from the chaos. Some people enjoy repetitive workouts, and they are comfortable in their weekly routines. They do the same thing the same way for years, as if it’s their form of meditation. I have my favorite methods of exercise, but I’m also one to crave new experiences. I like to switch things up every once in a while, especially when it comes to fitness. (So Gemini of me, I know.)
When Smart Barre reached out to me about trying a new trampoline fitness class they’ve been developing, I jumped on the opportunity. Not just because I have fond memories of trampolines as a child, but also because I have been searching for a new routine that gives me the blast of cardio I’ve been missing since my January fitness challenge with JoyRide. I strongly recommend that you try this new bounce class too. The workout is a high-energy invigorating hour of cardio mixed with weight training that’s set to upbeat dance music. You jump just enough that your adrenaline kicks in and gets you excited (because you’re not a little kid anymore and bouncing 1 foot off of a small trampoline is both risky and thrilling). The hour flies by, because you’re switching up your set of exercises throughout. You don’t stop for breaks, but you do get down off of the trampoline and use it as a prop for things like lunges, plié squats, planks, push-ups, and weights for biceps and triceps. When on the trampoline, you not only bounce but you also run, skip, and do lots of high-knees. You sweat, you laugh, and you work…and trust me, the next few days you feel it.
When class ended, I asked immediately when I could take the next one. Smart Barre is still in the instructor training phase for this class, so it appears in the schedule as a pop- up for now. Soon, however, the class will be added to the schedule regularly. In the meantime, make sure you’re following Smart Barre on social media to find out when they’re offering the next #smartbounce class because they fill up within minutes! And, because this is also a fashion blog, I would be remiss not to plug these amazing high-waisted DYI leggings and the Smart Barre graphic tee pictured above, available at all local Smart Barre studio locations.
